The ban, described in the Torah, traditionally dates to Moses, when he was given the law at Mount Sinai. Centuries earlier, God dramatically established the precedent when he first asked and then stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, Isaac. The Torah’s explicit prohibitions against child sacrifice, which was widespread in antiquity, would in time become a universal value that encouraged population growth.
