Under the 1918 Family Code, spouses could divorce unilaterally in minutes by submitting a brief notification—known as a “postcard” — to a government office. The unwanted spouse would three days later be informed by mail that the marriage had been dissolved, without need of any proof of fault such as adultery or abuse.
