Global warming not the culprit: Reproductive cells thwart adverse environmental conditions

Various studies have linked rising temperatures and climate-related heat exposure to reduced human fertility rates, lower conception rates, or higher infertility prevalence, often via effects on reproductive physiology (e.g., sperm production, fetal loss) or related mechanisms, with projections of worsening impacts under warming scenarios.

Research published in the July 2026 peer-reviewed Current Biology refutes the belief that reproductive cells respond directly to heat stress on their own. Instead, the study shows that neurons can prepare and protect reproductive cells before damage occurs, allowing animals to adjust their reproductive responses based on environmental conditions.

“As climate change increasingly affects fertility across many species, understanding the mechanisms that naturally protect reproductive cells becomes especially important,” explained Oded Rechav, an author based at the School of Neurobiology at Tel Aviv University. “Our work reveals a completely unexpected communication channel between the brain and the germline that may represent a fundamental biological strategy for adapting reproduction to changing environments.”
