1620 The Pilgrims’ crossing on the Mayflower

A small band of English Separatists seeking religious freedom left the relative safety of Europe, crossed a stormy Atlantic in a crowded vessel, and landed on an uncharted, harsh coastline with no guarantee of survival. They carried little more than their religious convictions and a written compact of self-rule. Their faith was that a community ordered by conscience and mutual covenant could take root in a wilderness and become a lasting refuge for liberty of belief.
