Boy George broke path in the world of music by refusing to follow the dominant script in much of the entertainment world. We Will Dance Again not only frames Israel’s military response as self-defense after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on the Nova music festival by opening with the blunt line “You say genocide, I say war / When you’re attacked, that’s what the army’s for.”  It also calls out the selective outrage common among celebrity activists by criticizing fellow musicians who “condemn the Jews, with selective memory” while “holding flags, mouthing like sheep.”

Despite risking backlash by speaking in plain, unapologetic terms rather than hedging or remaining silent, Boy George insists “I don’t feel brave, I just need to behave like a human.” In doing so, he set a standard for integrity that may embolden others—artists, public figures, and ordinary people—to shed their own fears of cancellation and voice honest views.
